EIGHTH GENERATION

128. John GARRON (photo) was born @1750 in supposedly County Kerry, Ireland. He died sometime after 1815 in Woods Harbour, Shelburne Co. Nova Scotia. He was buried in Woods Harbour, Shelburne Co. Nova Scotia. Family history has it that John Garron came from County Kerry, Ireland and was sent as a solider to Massachusetts to fight in the Revolutionary War for the British. supposedly with the 38th Regiment of foot. Certainly, we know that he was in the same regiment as Alexander Forbes and Daniel McGuire, fellow Loyalists who emigrated with Garron to Yarmouth Co., Nova Scotia after the end of the war.

We find the name of John Garrin on a land grant dated 21 Nov 1812 (Cogwell) and filed under the name of John Nickerson the elder. He and many others, including numerous Nickersons, Forbes and McGuire are granted 4,000 acres of land jointly in the area of Cocquinit Harbour, Shelburne Co. (Cocquicit means a kind of duck.) The document gives Garron lot number 26 of this plan, consisting of 100 acres of land. This must be his land in Woods Harbour/Shag Harbour. The next step would be to look for the petition to the land grant, which would explain why this group of men should receive the land and so then hopefully the regiment they served in.

We have contacted the successor regiment to the 38th, the South Staffordshire in England. The muster rolls of the 38th regiment of foot are said to have been lost.

The births of John and Lydia's children, and many of the children's marriages, are found in the Argyle and Tusket Township Books.

John and Lydia are supposedly buried in the same plot as some of their children, including Thomas James and John Jr., in Upper Woods Harbour. The Garron plot in Upper Woods Harbour is on the north side of a hill, on land now owned by James Nickerson. It used to be the Garron property, but was sold. There are seventeen graves there. A monument marks the grave of Enos Collins Garron, born November 24, 1864, died 1952.

John's children and grandchildren have always claimed Irish descent on census returns. He was married to Lydia LACEY before 1790.
