This might be the Joseph Pence listed in the 1861 Bristol, Queens Co. census (including Beach Meadows) as head of a household with 3 males and 2 females for a total of 5. No Joseph appears on the 1871 Bristol census.

In 1871, there is no Joseph but there is a Catharine Pentz, 67, who must be a widow, living with Issac Pentz, 28 and his wife Ellenor, 25, who had just gotten married that year in November. All are congregationalists, born in NS, of German origin. Also on that page is John Pence, 30 and his wife Sarah A., 28, who were married in the 12 months previous, in November.

My supposition is that Joseph Pence has died and this is his widow and children. There would have been another daughter as well according to the 1861 census, but it is very likely she had married in the 10 intervening years.

Whether this is the Joseph and Catherine Pentz who baptized William Pentz in 1839 at TALP is unclear. The date would be in line with the other children.If they were the same parents, it would have to mean that William died or moved somewhere before 1861 as there are only 3 males listed on the census. This is more probable than the other alternative, that John is not Joseph and Catherine's son and Issac's brother, since we don't find a William listed at all in 1871 here.

This is also possibly the Jacob Joseph Pentz born to Joseph Pentz and Maria Elizabeth Reinhardt. This would make sense because we have also found a Martin and John Pentz in Beach Meadows, and Joseph and Maria Elizabeth had three sons with these three names.

A few more things that affect this family: in the Records of Deeds of Queens County, there is the transfer of a piece of land in 1858 from Joseph Pentz Sr to Joseph Pentz Jr, and in 1862 the transfer of lands by Catherine Pentz, widow of Joseph Pentz, to John Mouzer. It is also recorded that in 1867, Joseph Pentz (must be the Jr.) deeded property to Issac Pentz and John Pentz (his brothers?). There is more than one person named Joseph in all this, and that's all I can sort out right now!

One more thing: In the archives at Halifax, there is a copy of a clipping from the Liverpool Transcript of October 14, 1858 which reads: "Joseph Pentz Junior of Beach Meadows, belonging to the schooner "Starlight" from this port, on a voyage to Labrador, while in the act of baiting his hook, found a beautiful gold diamond set ring round the neck of a caplin; as to its getting there cannot be ascertained; it is supposed the fish swam in while the ring was sinking." Parents: Joseph PENTZ and Maria Elizabeth REINHARDT.

In the 1891 Eagle Head, Queens Co. census (which includes Beach Meadows) John is not enumerated. Lucy Pentz is a widow, 69, Parker Pentz, 34 is a farmer and fisherman with a family, John Pentz, 38 is a fisherman with a family and there are two stray Pentz names, Sarah, 46, a widow, and Joseph, 19, her son, living with her. Notice that the name is not Pence now, but Pentz. I assume Sarah had been married to one of John and Lucy's other sons. Parents: Joseph PENTZ and Maria Elizabeth REINHARDT.

This is also probably the stray Jacob Pence who died in Beach Meadows in 1823. It would make sense if Joseph was actually "Jacob Joseph", as the time of death basically matches, and Joseph had a son Jacob Joseph who he might have named after himself. The only thing is that the Jacob notice gives his age at death as 42, giving an approximate birth date of 1781, and Joseph's birthdate is 1777. At these times though it was often a normal occurence for ages to be a few years out. The Jacob notice came from the Internet's Queens Co. death notices, primary sources. This is probably the same Joseph Pentz who is listed in the 1861 Petite Riviere census as the head of a family of 5 males and 2 females for a total of 7 in the household. It looks like by 1871 a daughter had gotten married.

This person could also be the Joseph Pentz born 1802, son of John Martin, son of Johannes Pentz. Sometimes ages given on census records are a few years out.

He could also be the Joseph Pentz who married Elizabeth Ross on 31 Dec 1833 by marriage bond. Since Ross sounds Scottish and Joseph's widow Elizabeth on the 1881 census listed herself as Scotch, this is likely.

I have a copy of the will of Joseph Pentz of Pentz settlement, naming his wife Elizabeth and sons James, Joseph, Levi and Simeon. One of the witnesses to the will is Joseph L. Pentz. Parents: Johann Martin PENTZ and Maria Elizabeth SPEIDEL.
